Miguel Rio Branco's photography captures bodies, men or women, often in tight framing where the background loses all depth. "Photography most often oppresses or suffocates reality," says the artist. By getting close, his images take on a dreamlike quality, without shying away from the grotesque, which overflows or is provoked by them, like in the later works of Goya. People have described Miguel Rio Branco's work as 'exorbitant realism' wherein disaster draws the eye into a vision of what appears dreamlike or imaginary, yet ultimately has no other outlet than a final recourse back towards reality.
