Raymond Pettibon: "It’s kind of personal to me because i grew up with the train whistles. when you're a kid you hear them going to sleep. It was close enough. Even in wasco, even in hermosa beach … almost always, the trains i do are not the streamlined amtrak, they're steam engines from the 1900s … whenever i see a train i want to take it into my hands. of course, when you do that you're dead. But it plays with the romantic mystification of the train … i like to have some distance from the present, because the past tells the present … i don't think the art buys into the romanticism of that. if it does it's with irony attached.
