The deliberately short captions give way to the voice of Gilles Caron, notably through his letters to his mother. Born in 1939, Gilles Caron took journalism courses at the École des hautes études internationales in Paris in 1958. Drafted for military service, he spent twenty-two months in Algeria, two of which were in prison following his refusal to fight after the putsch. In 1965, he joined the Apis agency and made his first contributions as a press agency photographer and reporter of the late 60s who is perhaps best known for his photographs of the events of May 68; yet he also left an extraordinarily rich and varied body of work.
